Daily Itinerary

Sogn / Voss Heritage Tour - Norway Day 1 Tue., July 29 - Mpls/St.Paul - Oslo
Depart Mpls/St.Paul on your transatlantic flight or request space from your home city upon registration.

Day 2 Wed., July 30 - Oslo
Arrive at Gardermoen Airport Oslo. Transfer to hotel in city center. Balance of day free to relax and adjust to time change. Welcome dinner and overnight at the classic Grand Hotel. [D]

Day 3 Thu., July 31 - Oslo
Morning sightseeing tour includes a visit to Vigeland Sculpture Park and the Viking Ship Museum. Afternoon and evening free to explore this vibrant city. Dinner on own. [B]

Day 4 Fri., Aug. 1 - Oslo - Flåm
Drive through the beautiful Hallingdal Valley to Gol. Continue to Hol and down the spectacular Aurland Valley to Flåm. Dinner and overnight at Fretheim Hotel. [B,D]

Day 5 Sat., Aug. 2- Flåm / Aurland Excursion
The municipality of Aurland comprises the Aurland Valley, Vassbygdi, Flåm, Undredal and Gudvangen along with the Aurland and Nærøy Fjords. Following a visit to the Flåm Church and the Brekke farm, cruise the dramatic Aurland and Nærøy Fjords (placed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 2005) from Flåm to Gudvangen. Continue to the quaint community of Undredal. Tour the Undredal Church, the smallest church in Scandinavia, built as a stave church in 1147. Visit Eldhuset for an introduction to the tradition of farming in the mountains, as well as the making of goat cheese. Dinner and entertainment follows. Return to Flåm for overnight at hotel. [B,D]

Day 6 Sun., Aug. 3- Flåm - Aurland - Voss
Drive to Aurland. Visit the local History Center and the Vangen Church, which celebrated its 800th anniversary in 2002. Proceed to Otternes. Tour the Otternes Bygdetun Museum with its 26 restored buildings dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. Return to Flåm. Board the Flåm Railway, ranked as one of the top 20 train rides in the world. Within 13 miles ascend 2800 feet to Myrdal, where we change to the famous Oslo/Bergen Railway and continue by train to Voss. Dinner and overnight at the historic Fleischer’s Hotel. [B,D]

Day 7 Mon., Aug. 4- Voss
Sightseeing in area includes Finnesloftet, a banquet hall built around 1250; Voss Church, built in 1277 in Romanesque style; and the Voss Folk Museum (Mølstertunet), a farmstead with buildings from the 16th century and a rich collection of folk art. Dinner and overnight at hotel. [B,D]

Day 8 Tue., Aug. 5 - Voss / Farm Visits or Bergen Excursion

Option A: Day free for individual farm visits in Voss and/or Aurland. A team of local genealogists are eager to connect participants to area farms and families. Visits to other areas, such as Hardanger and Vik, upon request. Individual services may involve extra charges. Ask for details.

Option B: Excursion to Bergen with a 3-hour city tour including Troldhaugen and a guided walk through the historic Hanseatic Wharf. Time free in Bergen prior to returning to Voss.

Day 9 Wed., Aug. 6 - Voss - Stalheim - Vik - Sogndal
Drive to Vinje. Side-trip to Stalheim.Ascend the 13 hairpin bends of the thrilling Stalheim Road. Return to Vinje and continue through Myrkdalen and over the majestic Vik Mountains to Vik. Visit the 12th century Hopperstad Stave Church, a replica of which is found in Moorhead, MN. En route to Vangsnes, side-trip to Feios, home of Nobel Prize winner Norman Borlaug. Ferry across the Sognefjord from Vangsnes to Hella. Drive along the fjord to Sogndal. Dinner and overnight at Quality Sogndal Hotel. [B,D]

Day 10 Thu., Aug. 7 - Sogndal / Luster Excursion
Drive through the Jostedal Valley to the Norwegian Glacier Center. Lunch in Skjolden. Drive past Feigum Falls and along the eastern shore of the Luster Fjord to Ornes. Visit the Urnes Stave Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Ferry to Solvorn. Return to Sogndal for dinner and overnight at hotel. [B,L,D]

Day 11 Fri., Aug. 8 - Sogndal - Lærdal - Fagernes
Cross the Sognefjord to Lærdal. Tour the Norwegian Wild Salmon Center situated on the banks of one of the most famous salmon rivers in Norway. Drive the scenic lower Lærdal Valley. Visit Borgund Stave Church, one of the most interesting and best preserved of the remaining stave churches. Continue across the Fillefjell Mountains to Fagernes in the heart of the lush Valdres Valley. Dinner and overnight at Quality Hotel & Resort Fagernes. [B,D]

Day 12 Sat., Aug. 9 - Fagernes

Option A: Optional individual farm visits in the Valdres area. Individual services may involve extra charges. Ask for details.

Option B: Sightseeing in area including a tour of the Valdres Folk Museum, as well as a visit to the studio of Sigmund Årseth, noted for the art of rosemaling.

Day 13 Sun., Aug 10 – Fagernes – Oslo – USA
Drive to Gardermoen Airport Oslo for return flight. Longer stays may be requested upon registration for an additional charge of $50. Inquire about independent tour extensions. [B]
